Remote Oil Filter

WHY?
What were the Yamaha engineers thinking when they designed this
setup? Changing the oil filter on this bike requires loosening the
exhaust system and dropping the right floorboard. Besides the fact
that this is a real pain, I was concerned about stripping exhaust and
side case bolts during repeated removal/installation. A Star owner on
the ISRA board
had the great idea of adding an external filter, and soon a number of
other companies. Two were available at the time I looked, and I
elected to buy from Motorcycle Enhancements. Their system uses a
stock Roadstar filter (either black or chrome) mounted in front of
the two downtubes. As of this writing, several other vendors (Jardine, Phat Performance and
Yamaha SportsCenter) also have kits available.
SERVICE. It
took over two weeks for the unit to arrive, which is longer than I'd
like. Other members on the ISRA board report delivery problems with
this company, so you might want to do some research before ordering.
The kit arrived fully assembled and well-packed. The workmanship on
this product is first-rate, and the chrome was flawless.
INSTALLATION.
I installed the kit at the same time I installed a new set of Bub's
Big Willy pipes, so I would just have to estimate that the
installation of the filter kit alone would have taken me well under
an hour. It was an easy job, and could be done by the average home
mechanic with a few metric tools. The instructions were very clear
and everything fit well. I am very impressed with the design of this kit.
RESULTS. This
product works so well that it really makes me mad at Yamaha--why the
heck don't they install one on every bike at the factory? Instead of
oil changes being a nightmare, they're now a simple 15-minute process.
WORTH THE
MONEY?
Yep. Any Star owner who does his/her own maintenance will
probably save money in the long run with this kit. |
