MaXair Predator Intake Kit

WHY? Okay, I give up. I love the performance of this bike, but I'm a sucker for any mod that gets me a 15-20% horsepower increase at a reasonable price. For months I have heard nothing but great things on the ISRA forum about the MaXair Predator kit, so I decided to take the plunge. I logged on to the MaXair Engineering site to check it out.

SERVICE. The new MaXair web site is very clean and easy to navigate. Ordering the kit was simple and credit cards are accepted. The web site also has a link to a private forum dedicated exclusively to customer support. I was impressed! I placed my order and received an email the next day saying that the kit had been shipped. It arrived three days later, complete and packaged very well. Instructions were very complete and included detailed photos .

INSTALLATION. Not for the faint of heart, but a job that can be tackled by a home mechanic with a decent set of tools and some patience. Start to finish, the whole installation took me about 3 hours. I worked very slowly and stayed close to the instruction sheet. I was hung up for a while in removing one of those blasted float bowl screws (a common problem), but everything went pretty smoothly. Work in good light and keep your work area clean. While you have your bike stripped down, it's a good time to adjust the valves. Though the instructions don't say so, be sure to synch the carbs after the installation.

RESULTS. When I finished, I set the choke and hit the starter. It took a few seconds to fill the float bowls, but the bike soon fired up. It responded well to the throttle, and I didn't see any obvious leaks. Good so far--now for a test drive. After it warmed up I clicked it into first and eased out the clutch. I drove pretty easily around the block, then turned onto a nearby state highway and hit the throttle. WOW! The rear tire broke loose (it's never done that before) and the rev limiter cut in before I knew it. Power seems to be much improved at all RPM levels, and I cruised effortlessly at 85-90 MPH. Did I mention the sound? REALLLLY NICE! I have also fitted an S&S air cleaner to add a retro look to the bike. See it here.

WORTH THE MONEY Absolutely! One of the best mods for the money I've ever done. I'm just concerned that I might have to spend a boatload of money having this silly grin surgically removed from my face...
